Caleb Williams vs. Drake Maye Voted on by NFL Personnel, Results Revealed After Bears Beat Patriots

Timothy RappOct 27, 2026

Before the Chicago Bears defeated the New England Patriots last Thursday, 30-24, Albert Breer of SI.com polled 17 coaches and executives from around the NFL about whether they'd prefer to build their franchise around Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.

Williams won out by a 12-5 margin, with Breer noting that his "ceiling, creativity and early record of clutch play" were the traits most cited in that decision.

"You call a perfect D, and still get beat, just like Josh [Allen] and [Patrick] Mahomes," an assistant general manager told him.

Maye, meanwhile, was preferred by some for his "personality and sustainability."

"Drake, but it's close," an offensive coordinator noted. "Drake appears to me to be a little ahead of Caleb operating in the pocket and getting through progressions in the passing game, and still has athleticism to create. Caleb has great athleticism/speed and arm strength but is maybe a little less consistent. ... Both are going to end up being really good."

Both players already led their respective franchises to a playoff berth last season, and both were fantastic on Thursday night, with Williams (308 passing yards, two touchdowns, no turnovers, 18 rushing yards) slightly getting the better of Maye (321 passing yards, two touchdowns, on interception, 26 yards and a score on the ground). The Bears and Pats are in good hands.
