Jerry Jones 'Could and Would' Hire Troy Aikman to Work for Cowboys, 'It's That Simple'

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that he'd be interested in hiring ESPN color commentator and former star quarterback Troy Aikman to a front office role.

"Yeah," Jones said during a Tuesday appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas (h/t Mark Maske of Front Office Sports). "Yes, I could and would. And so it's that simple because I do think that much of him, with his basic command and understanding and knowledge of NFL football. And so he certainly is qualified to do any of the things that have been mentioned. And I think he's outstanding at what he focuses on right now, and that's giving the story, the narration of the football games of all teams."

Aikman is currently under contract with ESPN, although he previously revealed that he'll be a "free agent" at the end of the 2026 NFL season.

He was spotted talking with Jones prior to the Cowboys' 38-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.

Jones also praised Aikman when discussing the possibility of a shift from broadcasting to front office work on Wednesday.

"Troy is very capable and he's so, really relatively speaking, he's in his youth as careers go," Jones told reporters. "He's very capable of doing any one of a number of things, certainly anything to do with football. I don't know of any area, short of getting back out on the field, I don't know of any area that Troy Aikman wouldn't be qualified and competent to go into."

Aikman, who spent all 12 years of his Hall of Fame career in Dallas, later expressed his appreciation for Jones' praise.

"This week he said some really kind things, which meant a lot to me, quite honestly," Aikman told Mike Fisher of Cowboys Roundtable regarding Jones (h/t Maske). "So, yeah, I would welcome any conversation with Jerry. And quite honestly I don't know if there would be or if there ever would be an opportunity. But if Jerry came to me and felt that, in his heart, I could lend some services that would help make them better, I would. I'd have a hard time not taking a good look at that."

While Aikman has primarily served as a color commentator since 2001, he also spent time as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins last offseason.

The 59-year-old assisted the Dolphins in their search for a new general manager and head coach before Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley were hired for each respective position.

As for the Cowboys, they currently sit at 3-4 as they attempt to avoid missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
