Rangers Sign New Goalie to Contract After Igor Shesterkin's Injury, Latest NHL Rumors Reveal
After losing veteran goalie Igor Shesterkin to a season-ending lower-body injury earlier this month, the New York Rangers found his potential replacement.
The Athletic's Vince Z. Mercogliano reported that the Rangers are signing James Reimer and placing him on their NHL roster, adding him behind the incumbent Dylan Garand.
Mercogliano noted that Reimer most recently had a stint with the Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford, posting a 35-save shutout in his only appearance on Friday.
A longtime veteran who made his NHL debut in 2010, Reimer has also suited up for the Toronto Maple Leafs, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators. He has a career save percentage of 90.9.
It was clear that the Rangers were in need of some depth behind Garand after he surrendered five goals in back-to-back losses to the Maple Leafs and Senators. At 7-5-1, New York ranks second in the Metropolitan Division, so the team is hoping to avoid falling behind early after failing to make the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.
The Rangers will be back in action on Monday night against a 2-5-2 Los Angeles Kings team that ranks near the bottom of the league with an average of 2.33 goals per game. This could be the best chance for Garand and Reimer to get on track as New York looks to end its two-game skid.
