Lamar Jackson Injury Update, Ravens QB to Undergo Surgery After Exiting on 1st Play in Return
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will undergo surgery on this thumb and will be placed on injured reserve, head coach Jesse Minter told reporters after his team's loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Jackson suffered the injury to his throwing hand during his first offensive snap of Sunday's game and was later ruled out.
When he returned to the sideline, he was wearing a brace on his thumb:
Evan Washburn of CBS Sports provided an update after the initial injury, including a close-up look at the injured thumb:
To make matters worse for the Ravens, backup Tyler Huntley was ruled out with a toe injury and was replaced by emergency quarterback Joe Fagnano:
Running back Justice Hill was set to be the next man up for the Ravens at quarterback if Fagnano suffered an injury, according to the CBS broadcast.
For the season, the two-time NFL MVP has completed 70.8 percent of his passes for 967 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. He's also rushed for 144 yards and one more score.
Jackson has missed his team's last three full games (Weeks 5-7 against the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals) due to a left high ankle sprain suffered against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4.
There was hope Jackson could play against Cincinnati. He was listed as questionable and provided an encouraging report on Oct. 22, two days before the game.
"Right now, I'm headed in the right direction," Jackson told reporters after Friday's practice. "I can't call it right now, still got a grace period, so we'll see, man, hopefully. But I feel like I'm heading in the right direction right now."
Jackson was ultimately ruled out, but his return appeared imminent.
The latest injury puts the Ravens in a difficult position after falling to 4-4 on the season.
