Manchester United Transfer News: Borja Mayoral Eyed Amid David De Gea Rumours

Christopher SimpsonAug 20, 2015

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Real Madrid youth sensation Borja Mayoral and could seek to include him "as part of any deal to sell David De Gea."

That's according to ESPN FC's Peter O'Rourke, who adds that United want at least £32.6 million for the 'keeper, and with an exchange deal for Sergio Ramos off the table, they have turned their attention to the young striker.

The 18-year-old enjoyed a staggering goal return last season at Real Madrid Castilla, per Real Madrid TV presenter Phil Kitromilides:

That tally is on top of "a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque 102 goals in 77 games" for Real's Juvenil sides, per ESPN FC's Rob Train.

Train goes on to compare Mayoral with Los Blancos legend Raul, who scored 322 goals for the club.

After noting the "striking similarities" between the two players' remarkable progression through the youth ranks at Real Madrid, Train adds:

"

The old football saying "if they're good enough, they're old enough," applies to Mayoral: he is certainly good enough. Raul was, and so was [Alvaro] Morata, as he is proving now with Juventus. But despite the obvious parallels there is one key difference between Mayoral and Raul. The same eye for goal is obvious, but his movement, dribbling skills and balance also make him a fine attacker running from deep.

"

United could do with a boost up front as they lack quality and depth in that position, while Wayne Rooney has endured a difficult start to the season despite being restored to a central striking role.

The Englishman will be 30 in October, so the search for his long-term successor should ideally be taking place in the coming seasons.

Javier Hernandez has repeatedly been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, per Sam Long of the London Evening Standard, albeit the Mexican did feature as a substitute in the Champions League win over Club Brugge.

James Wilson is the only other option, and though the 19-year-old's return of three Premier League goals in 420 minutes of playing time is promising, another addition would be most welcome for United.

Unfortunately for United, prising him away from Real Madrid seems unlikely.

Los Blancos appear well aware of their precocious talent, with manager Rafael Benitez possibly set to use the Spaniard as cover following his inclusion in Real's squad for the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy win over Galatasaray on Tuesday, per Madrid-based journalist Dermot Corrigan:

The striker has an incredibly exciting future ahead of him, and the club will be reticent to let him leave even to acquire David De Gea, who will be available on a free transfer next year.

Expect Mayoral to stay at the Bernabeu this season, and remember the name.
