Changes WWE Needs for WrestleMania 43 ๐ ๏ธ
WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio reportedly could be set to wrestle the final match of his illustrious career in 2027.
According to WrestleVotes on Fightful Select (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), there have been "rumblings" within WWE regarding Mysterio possibly retiring next year.
WWE has reportedly "discussed ideas on how to present," although it isn't yet known when or where his retirement match would take place, or who it would be against.
The 51-year-old Mysterio has long been regarded as one of the luchadores of all time, as well as one of the greatest professional wrestlers in general.
He has been an active wrestler since 1989, and he continues to perform at a high level even today, as evidenced his the Triple Threat match between him, Chad Gable and Dragon Lee this week on Raw.
Mysterio earned a rare honor in 2023 when WWE inducted him into the Hall of Fame despite still being an active wrestler.
While Mysterio has shown no real signs of slowing down, retirement has to come eventually, and it would be fitting if it happens in 2027 given that fellow legends John Cena and AJ Styles retired within the past year as well.
Mysterio is the on-screen general manager in AAA, and even if he retires, he could continue to serve in that role while also contributing behind the scenes.
On top of that, Rey's son Dominik is a top star on Raw and his daughter Aalyah is training at the WWE Performance Center, so there is plenty of incentive for him to remain involved with the company even in retirement.
Latest on Reported Reigns vs. Femi, Punk vs. Rhodes WrestleMania Plans
A recent report regarding WWE's planned main events for WrestleMania 43 may not have been entirely accurate.
Last week, WrestleVotes on Fightful Select (h/t WrestlePurists) reported that WWE was discussing Roman Reigns vs. Oba Femi and CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes for WrestleMania this coming April.
However, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlePurists) followed up Friday by reporting that while Reigns vs. Femi is indeed in the plans, Punk vs. Rhodes is not.
Reigns vs. Femi being the direction for WrestleMania 43 is no surprise given that the groundwork was made back at WrestleMania 42.
After Femi defeated Brock Lesnar and Reigns beat Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship, Oba called out Roman during the post show.
Then, following Femi's win over Bronson Reed and Reigns' win over LA Knight at Money in the Bank, Oba spoke about his desire to challenge The OTC once again.
As for Punk and Rhodes, they already met in a WWE Championship match at SummerSlam, which Punk won.
They left enough meat on the proverbial bone to go back to it, but the WWE Championship scene on SmackDown is crowded with plenty of big stars in the mix.
Sami Zayn is the reigning champ, but Punk, Rhodes, Randy Orton, Kevin Owens, Finn Balor and Gunther are just a few of the Superstars vying for an opportunity.
Punk vs. Rhodes at WrestleMania 43 very much feels possible, but with so many moving parts, it is far from guaranteed.
WWE Reportedly Considering Major Nikki Bella Push
WWE has reportedly been impressed with Hall of Famer Nikki Bella as of late, and she could potentially be in line for a significant push.
According to WrestleVotes on Fightful Select (h/t Mukherjee), Bella has been "drawing praise" within WWE recently, and the company has taken particular notice of her strong numbers on social media.
Bella has reportedly "exceeded expectations" with her social media impact and merchandise sales, and a source indicated that they would not be surprised if Nikki is given a "bigger spotlight" moving forward.
A two-time Divas champion, Bella returned to WWE in 2025 as a surprise entrant in the women's Royal Rumble match, and she has been back wrestling on a semi-regular basis since June 2025.
While an injury kept her off the WrestleMania 42 card, Nikki returned in July and turned heel by attacking Paige.
Nikki and Paige have been embroiled in a rivalry ever since, and they have traded wins and losses on SmackDown.
At the same time, Bella has had several backstage segments with WWE women's champion Chelsea Green in recent weeks, which could be foreshadowing an eventual match between them.
Should that happen, perhaps Nikki has a chance to become the new women's champion more than a decade after she last held the Divas Championship.
