MLS Goalie Roman Burki Hospitalized After Scary Injury During St. Louis vs. Crew U.S. Open Cup Final
There was a scary scene in the second half of Wednesday's U.S. Open Cup final between the Columbus Crew and St. Louis City SC.
St. Louis goalkeeper Roman Bürki took an inadvertent knee to the head while making a save on a loose ball in front of his net. He remained down for a number of minutes before he was taken off the field on a stretcher as concerned fans chanted his name.
The broadcast said he was conscious and taken to the hospital.
Backup goalkeeper Ben Lundt entered the scoreless tie for St. Louis after play resumed.
Bürki entered Wednesday's contest with 28 starts during the 2026 MLS season for St. Louis. He has allowed 39 goals with 74 saves and four clean sheets.
This was also his fifth start in the 2026 U.S. Open Cup for his club, and he tallied two clean sheets in his previous four. He appeared on his way to another clean sheet before the injury and stood strong despite the Crew controlling the majority of play and creating chances in the first half.
St. Louis has a quick turnaround following Wednesday's game, so Lundt may be thrown into action beyond just the end of the U.S. Open Cup final.
It faces Real Salt Lake on Saturday when MLS play resumes.
