Aaron Boone Defends Yankees Clubhouse Amid Accountability Criticism After MLB Playoff Exit

Timothy RappOct 21, 2026

Fans in the Bronx and former players weren't thrilled with the 2026 version of the New York Yankees, with Hall of Famer CC Sabathia going so far as to say that the current players weren't living up to the "standard" expected of the organization.

But manager Aaron Boone sees things a bit differently and defended the clubhouse culture on Wednesday.

"I think we can always be better at the standard because we expect to be a champion every year," he told reporters. "And I think we do have a lot of the right ingredients in that room that are pushing towards that standard. And I even look to our clubhouse this year, where I know that's been brought up... but I feel like our clubhouse this year was, again, a strength. This team dealt with a lot and handled it, and handled it without pointing fingers but just by sticking their nose down and competing really well."

Frustrations are understandable for an organization accustomed to winning—the Yankees haven't won a title since 2009, with the 17-year drought matching the team's longest in the modern era. But Boone doesn't believe the issue is stemming from the team's internal culture.
