Reggie Wayne Reportedly Signs 1-Year Contract with New England Patriots

Scott PolacekAug 19, 2015

Reggie Wayne reportedly agreed to sign a one-year contract with the New England Patriots on Monday after visiting with the team over the weekend, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

On Sunday, Schefter, citing league sources, reported Wayne was taking a physical with the Patriots after arriving in New England on Saturday night.

"I think that's great for Reg," Colts head coach Chuck Pagano said of Wayne possibly signing with the Pats, per ESPN.com's Mike Wells"He wanted to play another year or so. I'm happy that they're looking at him and there's an opportunity. Obviously the relationship is a very close one. Again, you just want the best for the guy and the player. If that happens, then that's great for Reg. I'd be extremely happy for him."

Former Colts teammate T.Y. Hilton also spoke to Wayne over the weekend, per Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star, and said the veteran wideout was "dead set" on playing one more season.

Other teams were interested in Wayne as the preseason progressed. ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini reported the Green Bay Packers could call the 36-year-old, noting it was dependent on the results of the MRI on Nelson's injured knee. On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported the Packers feared Nelson had torn his ACL during a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, an injury that would end his season.

On Aug. 19, Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer noted the Carolina Panthers had not reached out to Wayne after star receiver Kelvin Benjamin tore his ACL during a practice. Rapoport noted the former Florida State pass-catcher will miss the entire 2015 season as a result of the injury.

Wayne will turn 37 in November and failed to reach 800 receiving yards in each of the past two seasons after topping 1,000 in eight of the nine years before 2013. Still, Wayne could be the ideal short-term rental player.
