Najee Harris Reportedly Released by Giants Days After Cam Skattebo Had 0 Carries vs. Saints
The New York Giants' running back room continues to raise more questions than answers.
After Cam Skattebo registered zero carries in Sunday's 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that the Giants opted to release veteran ball-carrier Najee Harris.
Harris signed with the Giants on a one-year deal in August to add some depth to a crowded backfield. He never recorded 10 or more carries in a game, but he had a season-high 52 yards in a Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans. However, his production quickly dwindled, and he was limited to four carries and two yards in Sunday's loss against the Saints.
New York mustered just 84 rushing yards against New Orleans, with backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy leading the team with 26 yards on two carries. Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. had a team-high six carries for just 18 yards and the team's lone rushing touchdown, and he also caught a touchdown pass. Devin Singletary had four carries for 14 yards.
However, the story of the game was Skattebo, who was on the field for just six snaps.
"We didn't bench Cam Skattebo. It was not by design. All those guys were taking equal reps the first half. We were trying to see who could make something happen, who could get a hot hand and earn it," Giants head coach John Harbaugh said after the game. "Nobody's really taken the bull by the horns. You can say I don't like that, I don't like you divvying up the snaps between four backs. I can tell you I don't like it, either. One of those guys needs to step up. Someone needs to step up and be the back. And none of those guys has done that yet."
It's unclear what direction the Giants are planning to go in following Harris' release, but they will have to figure things out before facing the Houston Texans in Week 7.
