Stefon Diggs Says It's 'Wide Open' for Commanders in NFC East Despite 1-4-1 Start to NFL Season

On the heels of another close loss for the Washington Commanders that dropped their record to 1-4-1, Stefon Diggs believes they are still more than capable of winning the NFC East.

Speaking to reporters after Monday's 23-17 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers, Diggs said "it's still wide open" for the Commanders in the division race.

The Commanders nearly overcame a 23-3 deficit by scoring 14 unanswered points against the 49ers. They had the ball in San Francisco territory on the final play of the game, but Jayden Daniels was sacked to end it.

This was yet another week in which the Commanders' situational awareness and late-game execution left something to be desired. Daniels threw the ball away on a fourth-and-2 early in the second quarter down 13-3.

On the second-to-last offensive possession, the Commanders had to call a timeout when it appeared as if they were late lining up out of the huddle. This allowed the 49ers to run more time off the clock on their next possession so Washington got the ball back with 52 seconds to play.

The final drive saw Daniels called for intentional grounding after the Commanders got down to the Niners' 28-yard line. The penalty not only cost them 10 yards, but an automatic 10-second runoff so there were only six seconds remaining for the final play.

Despite some of these recent issues and their current record, which has them sitting last in the division, Diggs' statement that things are still wide open feels accurate.

No team in the NFC East has won a game since Week 4. The New York Giants are the only team in the division with a winning record (3-2-1). The Dallas Cowboys (2-4) have put up 29 points in their last two games. The Philadelphia Eagles are a mess right now and won't have Jalen Hurts for the remainder of the season.

Given how well Daniels is playing, even with some of situational mistakes, and the fourth-easiest remaining strength of schedule, there's no reason the Commanders can't be atop the NFC East when the regular season ends.
