Brian Schottenheimer Hot-Seat Buzz Addressed by Cowboys' Stephen Jones After Packers Loss

Andrew PetersOct 19, 2026

Despite a 2-4 start to the season for the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Brian Schottenheimer's job is not in jeopardy.

The team's executive vice president, Stephen Jones, said Schottenheimer "has the team."

"There's not any question in (Cowboys owner Jerry Jones') and my mind," he said on 105.3 The Fan (h/t The Athletic's Jon Machota). "He has the team. There's no question they want to go out there and execute and make things happen. Feel really good about our coaching staff. We just got to have it continue to evolve and get to a point to where we can win these football games."

Jones' comments come after Dallas' 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, a game Jones called "very disappointing." Still, Jones is confident the Cowboys can turn things around.

"But at the same time, we got a lot of football to play," Jones said. "We've got resolve. We just got to go back to work. We like the players. We like the coaches."

Much like last year, Dallas' offense has been mostly competent while the defense has lacked. That wasn't the case Sunday, though, when both units struggled.

The Cowboys at least need the offensive trio of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens to do their job. From there, it's a matter of getting the defense to click.

But even after the rough start, it appears Schottenheimer has some breathing room in his second season. If things continue to get worse, Jones' tone may change at the end of the season.
