Sam Darnold Blasted by Rival NFL Coach, 'No One Feels Good' About Seahawks QB in 2-Minute Drill

Timothy RappOct 19, 2026

Sam Darnold threw a pair of interceptions late in Thursday's 17-14 loss against the Denver Broncos, ultimately costing his team a chance to win the game.

They were his sixth and seventh interceptions of the season through four full starts, a concerning trend. Certainly eyebrows are raising around the NFL.

"They are 3-3, and they probably have a 3-3 quarterback," a defensive coach from another team told The Athletic's Mike Sando. "No one feels good with Sam Darnold having to play two-minute (offense) to win, right? Not Kevin O'Connell, not Mike Macdonald, not any of his other coaches who had him felt good about it."

Darnold, 29, led the team to a Super Bowl title last season and has generally been a different player since a 2023 season with Mike Shanahan in San Francisco then he was early in his career, when he struggled mightily with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers. But it's clear that the turnover-happy player of his youth is still lurking under the surface at times.

In 2024, for example, Darnold led the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-3 record and a playoff berth, but was awful in the Wild Card Round, throwing a pick and taking nine sacks in a 27-9 loss against the Los Angeles Rams. He also threw four picks against the Rams during a regular-season loss in 2025.

In general, Darnold has been a great addition for the Seahawks, given last year's title. But his 2026 season has gotten off to a worrying start.
