Everything Nick Sirianni Said on Jalen Hurts Playing for Eagles, Flying After Blood Clot Diagnosis
With Jalen Hurts potentially sidelined for the season with blood clots and reports circulating about how the situation was handled for the team's Week 5 trip to London to face the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed the media Monday.
"The health of our players is always at the forefront of our mind," he said in his initial comments. "We'll leave that up to the medical experts. But we always, always care deeply about our players."
He was then asked about Hurts playing in the game and said (three-minute mark), "I'm not a medical expert. I lean on those guys in all those situations. I'm a football coach, I lean on our medical experts in every situation. I have full trust and full faith in them. It's not just me that has major care for our players, it's them as well."
Sirianni was then asked why Hurts flew home after the game, and he reiterated that he is not a medical expert and "always put the players' health first and foremost in every situation."
He also continued to point to the team's statement that was released Monday that said, in part, "He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. … Jalen's prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery.
"We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects."
Sirianni's press conference came after Tom Pelissero of The Ringer reported Monday that Hurts is expected to miss the season "after new imaging over the weekend found several blood clots in his lungs."
Notably Pelissero also reported Hurts was told not to sleep after he was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in London, which meant he was awake for "roughly 36 hours when he started against the Jaguars."
However, Pelissero followed up and said he spoke to Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, who said the quarterback was able to sleep at the stadium after rejoining the team following an evaluation at the hospital.
Lynn also released a statement on the situation:
Philadelphia ended up losing that game 19-17 after Ameer Abdullah's long kickoff return set up Cam Little's game-winning 57-yard field goal in the final seconds. Hurts went 21-of-40 for 220 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.
He was sidelined for the following game against the Carolina Panthers, which was a 25-14 loss for the Eagles.
Tanner McKee played in his place and will presumably remain under center when Philadelphia takes on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7.
