Schottenheimer, Dak Take Blame After Cowboys Lose to Packers, 'Mistakes are Killing Us'
After losing to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football and falling to 2-4, the Dallas Cowboys are left searching for answers.
Per The Athletic's Jon Machota, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and quarterback Dak Prescott shouldered the blame for the team's poor start to the 2026 campaign.
"I'm going to just start with what I told the guys," Schottenheimer said. "The effort is right. The fight is right. But mistakes are killing us. Repeating mistakes is not what we're about. We got to clean it up. Lost two games in a row. Haven't played well. And got to take a hard look at it. And that starts with me."

Takeaways from every NFL game
The Cowboys struggled to get anything going offensively in their 23-13 loss to a Packers team that was without stars Micah Parsons, Edgerrin Cooper and Javon Hargrave. It was the second straight week that Dallas failed to crack the 20-point mark, a far cry from what was expected of one of the most skilled offensive units in the league.
"We got to figure that out," Prescott said of their offensive struggles. "I wish I could give you that answer at this time. (I have to) watch the film to see what wasn't done or what wasn't executed efficiently. I know I had plays out there that I want back that I know directly correlated to a turnover and us getting off the field on third down, and fourth down on one of them. I don't have the answer for the whole team and what that is, but I believe in who we are and I know we have the talent and the men that care. We just have to put it together. Our process is right, but we have to win on Sunday."
Prescott threw two interceptions and finished with 258 yards and a touchdown on 34-of-54 passing. The signal-caller now has five interceptions through the first six weeks of the season, already halfway to the 10 picks he threw in all of 2025.
"We're in a hole," Schottenheimer said. "We put ourselves there, and there's one way out of it. That's what I told the guys. I said, you got to work, got to find solutions, can't repeat mistakes. And they understand that."
As Machota noted, how Schottenheimer handles these next few weeks "could be what ultimately determines his future in Dallas." The second-year head coach expressed confidence that his team can bounce back and return to playoff contention this year.
"There's definitely time to pull out of it," he said. "But we got to fix the mistakes that we've talked about. โฆ Go back to work. That's what we're going to do. Division game, Philadelphia (next week), another place that's tough to play at. But our guys are going to respond. It's not the effort, it's the execution. And that's what we got to clean up, and that's as a football team, coaches and players alike."
Prescott echoed that sentiment and had an optimistic outlook on the Cowboys' chances of chasing the NFC East crown, starting with their Monday Night Football clash against the division rival Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7.
"It's about us fixing our issues, cleaning house and just getting better. From there, the division is open, that will take care of itself," Prescott said. "But we have to win first and we have to get going and from there we can try to build. It is about finding a way to win."
