49ers' Brock Purdy Says He's Not Josh Allen, Burrow and What He Must Do When 'I Can't Always See'
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has never let his physical limitations hold him back, but he's had to go the extra mile to overcome them.
While speaking to ESPN's Nick Wagoner ahead of San Francisco's Week 6 matchup against the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football, Purdy explained how he's navigated being an undersized signal-caller.
"I'm not the Josh Allen- or Joe Burrow-type quarterbacks where they're really big and you'd think they could [see the whole field better]," the 6'1" Purdy told Wagoner. "But I have to take everything into account. ⦠That's why I'm huge on like, 'This receiver's taking eight steps and he's breaking to daylight on this coverage. I know this hole's going to be there.' And taking those kinds of things into factor because I can't always see."
Purdy has adopted vision training methods that extend beyond the 49ers' practice facility. Wagoner reported that the 26-year-old "spends a little time each day of the offseason" trying to improve his vision, whether he's at home in Nashville, Tennessee, or training in Florida.
"Equipped with an iPad and 3D glasses, he watches two squares move in, out and around," Wagoner detailed. "His job is to identify how and when those squares converge and diverge with his eyes moving in and out rapidly."
Wagoner added that Purdy "also does daily work with saccades, a rapid eye movement exercise in which he must follow arrows that pop up all over a screen and touch the correct one when prompted." These sessions are meant to "force him to process movement and information as fast as possible while improving his depth perception."
Purdy made it clear that he feels his vision training has been beneficial to his career, and the 49ers' 5-0 start to this season is proof that things are paying off.
"All those things help me just work on my eyesight, my eyes moving, being quick with my eyes, making quick decisions," Purdy said. "And then it records my decision-making, how fast, the percentage of getting right and wrong. I do think it helps."
