The Cleveland Browns defense was as dominant as could be for three quarters. The Cleveland Browns offense did just enough for one half.
The result is a 4-2 Browns team picking up a 13-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
The defense gave up 10 points to a Tyler Huntley-led Ravens offense, but settled in to play three shutout quarters. The offense finally decided to contribute in the second half and set up a 37-yard field goal as time expired.
Let's take a look at how it all went down and hand out some grades to the key players from Sunday afternoon.
Quarterback
1 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Deshaun Watson: C-
Deshaun Watson was slow in this game.
He was slow to make decisions. Slow in running the ball and slow to decide to make just enough clutch plays to lead the game-winning drive.
Watson ended up taking five sacks on the game. It was a combination of his offensive line and the aforementioned speed with which he made decisions.
Yet, he connected with Jerry Jeudy of all people on a 33-yard strike on 3rd and 5 with under a minute to go. He made a few plays with his feet en route to a 10-play 62-yard drive to run out the final two minutes with a game-winning field goal.
That's just enough to keep him in the C range despite going 16-of-26 for 164 yards on the afternoon.
Running Backs
2 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Jaleel McLaughlin: C
All things considered, Jaleel McLaughlin filled in admirably. The Browns run game has been disappointing all season and McLaughlin had to step in as the primary rusher with Quinshon Judkins, Raheim Sanders and Dylan Sampson all out with injuries.
His 4.6 yards per carry was actually an improvement over what Judkins has done most weeks. He also made a few key blocks in pass protection to buy Watson an extra second.
Audric Estime: C-
Estime's final stat line doesn't look great (nine carries, 19 yards), but he punched it in from two yards out to score the only offensive touchdown on the day.
Wide Receivers
3 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
KC Concepcion: C
Concepcion still hasn't put up a breakout performance, but he does his job as the Browns chain-moving wide receiver. He caught four of his six targets for 37 yards.
He also gets bonus points for holding on to the ball when he decided to tuck and run the double pass. The trick play was covered and forcing the ball could have gotten ugly quick.
Denzel Boston: D
Boston has been the team's most explosive receiver all season. He offered little in that department this week. He had a ball ripped out of his hands on 3rd and 5 in the fourth quarter. He had a catch for 15 yards on five targets.
Jerry Jeudy: B+
Don't look now, but Jerry Jeudy came through in the clutch for the second time in the last three weeks. He came open on a dig on a 3rd-and-5 to move the chains with a huge 33-yard gain in the final drive of the game.
It was a crucial catch and boosted his final line to four catches on four targets for 69 yards.
Tight Ends
4 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Harold Fannin Jr.: D
Fannin was just about a non-factor in this one. He caught just one pass for nine yards, although his lack or production wasn't completely on him.
The Ravens sniffed out a designed screen to him and Watson had to kill the play. It is worth noting that he set up a fourth-and-1 with his nine yard catch in the third quarter. The Browns went on to convert, so his only catch was important for sustaining that drive.
Offensive Line
5 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Spencer Fano: C
Fano drew a tough matchup against Trey Hendrickson and had some struggles. Those came to a head when the veteran pass-rusher was able to work inside and Fano was slow to recover and gave up a sack on a 3rd-and-4.
Zion Johnson: C+
Johnson was pretty solid for most of the afternoon. The lowlight was a sack that he gave up to Calais Campbell, but Watson didn't get the ball out quickly enough so it wasn't all on him.
Elgton Jenkins: D+
The Ravens defense put Jenkins in tough situations multiple times. He was the primary culprit behind the sack that Nnamdi Madubuike and Tavius Robinson split in the third quarter. He tried to replace a pulling Austin Barber and was immediately driven into Watson's lap.
Austin Barber: B
Barber was a bright spot on the offensive line. He wasn't at fault for any of the team's sacks and put together a nice bounceback performance after struggling against the Jets last week.
Tytus Howard: B
This was Howard's best game as a Cleveland Brown. He seems to have addressed his false start issues for the second week in a row. He took care of business after struggling against David Bailey last week.
Edge
6 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Jared Verse: B+
Those just judging by Verse's sack production will still be frustrated, but the reality is that Verse was a huge reason for the success of the defense Sunday. Derrick Henry loves running outside zone and Verse was setting the edge like a menace throughout the game.
The pass production might be disappointing, but Verse was elite against the run.
Isaiah McGuire: B
McGuire was the Browns best pass-rushing edge defender. He joined the sack party with an untouched quarterback takedown coming off the backside edge of the Ravens ' protection scheme.
Derek Barnett and Sam Williams: B
Barnett and Williams did a fine job as the rotational edges. They shared that responsibility and put some pressure on Tyler Huntley even if neither registered a sack.
Defensive Line
7 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Adin Huntington: A-
Huntington keeps playing a pivotal role with Mason Graham out of the lineup. The interior rusher didn't quite get a sack, but he logged three quarterback hits on Huntley and was beating the block in front of him with quickness.
Maliek Collins: B+
Collins had a nice secondary inside move to get his lone sack of the game. It wasn't his only time getting pressure on the quarterback, though. He continues to be difficult for guards and centers to block on the inside.
Sam Kamara: B+
Kamara was asked to play way more snaps than usual on Sunday. He didn't look out of place, though. He was a standout in slowing down Derrick Henry with a couple of run stops on the afternoon.
Linebackers
8 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Carson Schwesinger: A
It doesn't get much better for an off-ball linebacker than what Carson Schwesinger did on Sunday. He finished with 13 total tackles and forced the fumble against Derrick Henry that turned momentum the Browns' way in the fourth quarter.
Schwesinger's sideline-to-sideline speed was huge in shutting down the run game and every tackle he made in the run game was a successful play for Cleveland, per Next Gen Stats.
Quincy Williams: A-
Schwesinger's running mate wasn't too far behind him. His presence as a blitzer was huge. He notched a sack and two quarterback hits. He became a key chess piece when defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg was dialing up pressures on third downs.
Secondary
9 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
Denzel Ward: A-
The pass rush will get a lot of credit for the win, but the secondary did their job most of the day too. Ward had a nice bounce-back game after an uncharacteristically bad one last week.
He gave up no big plays on the day and had a batted pass. The only negative was a dropped interception that could have helped the cause.
Tyson Campbell: B
The Ravens didn't test Campbell much and he got a hand on one of the few targets that went his way.
Myles Harden: C
Harden has been inconsistent for much of the season. Sunday was not some of his best work. He got beat trying to track Zay Flowers across the field on a 3rd-and-11 in the third quarter.
Still, Flowers beats a nickel just about every week and Harden managed two passes defended.
Grant Delpit: Incomplete
Delpit doesn't get a grade due to injury. He left in the first quarter and was ruled out with a concussion. The injury led to a lot more playing time for Emmanuel McNeil-Warren.
Ronnie Hickman: B-
Hickman was fine as a tackler, making a few stops in space that could have gone for much bigger gains. He wasn't picked on in coverage, either.
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren: B+
The rookie got called into more action after Grant Delpit left the game with a concussion. He made the most of the opportunity with six tackles, including a tackle for a loss and a pass defensed.
He looked right at home in the team's base defense.
Special Teams
10 of 10.jpg?w=2560)
K Andre Szmyt: B-
Szmyt, of course, gets credit for kicking the game-winning field goal as time expired. However, he also gets dinged for going wide left on the 48-yard field goal that would have given them the lead with under four minutes.
P Corey Bojorquez: A-
The Browns made Bojorquez earn his paycheck this week. He finished the game with seven punts for 315 yards. Two of them were downed inside the 20.
