John Beake Dies at 87, Former Broncos GM Led Franchise to 2 Super Bowl Titles
Former Denver Broncos general manager John Beake has died at the age of 87, the team announced Saturday.
Beake served as the Broncos' general manager from 1984-98, helping them capture two Super Bowl titles and make five Super Bowl appearances.
"The Broncos are saddened by the passing of longtime executive John Beake, who made an enduring impact on our organization during more than two decades with the team," the organization said in a statement released Saturday. "John helped guide the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances, including back-to-back World Championships, and was a respected leader throughout one of the most successful eras in franchise history. Following his time in Denver, he remained an influential figure through his work with the NFL and on the Broncos Ring of Fame Committee. Our deepest condolences are with his wife, Marcia, his sons, Chip and Chris, and the entire Beake family."
Denver owned a 152-86-1 overall record during his tenure as general manager.
Beake started his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1968, operating as an offensive assistant under Hall of Fame head coach Hank Stram. He remained a member of the Chiefs' staff until 1974, helping the team win a Super Bowl title during their 1969 campaign.
Beake eventually served as Colorado State's offensive coordinator in 1975 before returning to the NFL level the following year, becoming an assistant coach for the New Orleans Saints.
He left the Saints in 1977, beginning his 22-year tenure with Denver in 1979.
Beake held multiple roles on the Broncos including director of pro personnel and director of player personnel before taking over as general manager.
He made several notable moves during his time in Denver, highlighted by the trade for quarterback John Elway after he was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1983 NFL draft. Elway ended up spending all 16 years of his Hall of Fame career with the Broncos, retiring as their all-time passing leader.
As for Beake, his last year as Denver's general manager occurred in 1998 before he assumed the role of vice president of administration for the team.
His time with the Broncos came to an end after the 2000 season, joining the NFL league office as the managing director of NFL Europe's football operations. He was promoted to vice president of football development and operations before his retirement was announced in 2004.
Following Beake's retirement, he served as a member of the Broncos' Ring of Fame committee to assist the franchise as it honored former players.
