Jalen Hurts' Health Discussed by Eagles HC Nick Sirianni, Devonta Smith, More

Paul KasabianOct 16, 2026

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss his team's home game on Sunday vs. the Carolina Panthers as he deals with a superficial blood clot initially discovered last Saturday.

Both head coach Nick Sirianni and wide receiver Devonta Smith spoke about Hurts on Friday with reporters.

"I'm always concerned for our guys. Jalen and I have a special relationship. There's times I've said to Jalen, 'I know you like I know my brother,'" Sirianni said at his Friday press conference with reporters (h/t ESPN's Tim McManus).

"We've spent a lot of time together. We've been to the highest of highs, we've had lows. ... Your first reaction is always the care for the player because this is not just a coach-player relationship."

Smith has this to say when asked if he spoke with Hurts.

"He's fine," Smith said. "It's bigger than football. Something like this that's very serious puts a lot of things into perspective."

The Eagles have gone 59-28 in Hurts' starts over seven seasons since he took over as QB 1 late in the 2020 season. Philadelphia has won a pair of NFC titles and a Super Bowl with Hurts at the helm.

This year has been a struggle for Hurts and the 2-3 Eagles, who are fourth-last in scoring (18.4 PPG). Hurts has completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 933 yards (6.1 yards per attempt) and eight touchdowns (three interceptions). He's also rushed for 107 yards and another score.

Hopefully Hurts will be back as soon as possible for Philadelphia. He's certainly dealing with a scary situation right now after news that the blood clot moved.

He certainly has the concern of his teammates, including wideout Dontayvion Wicks.

"It's hard when you find out your leader has to sit out for something like that," Wicks said, per McManus. "It's real serious. You never know what people are going through because he played the game last week and we didn't know. But we just stick by his side and be there for him while he's going through what he's going through and just doing what we've got to do until he gets back."

In the meantime, Tanner McKee will take over for the Eagles as QB1. He's attempted passes in four games over two seasons, completing 54-of-88 throws (61.4 percent) for 597 yards (6.8 yards per attempt), five touchdowns and one interception.
