Eric Bieniemy Has 'No Problems' With Patrick Mahomes After Heated Exchange During Chiefs vs. Raiders
Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy says there are no communication issues between himself and quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the wake of their heated exchange on the sideline of a Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
"I have no problems with guys venting their frustrations, because I want them to," Bieniemy told reporters Thursday. "That's part of the dynamic of the relationship that we have... if there's something that's taking place out on the field, they may have a better point of view than what we do from off the field, and so I want them to feel comfortable coming to share that stuff with me."
About his sideline conversation with Mahomes, Bieniemy said, "At that particular time, I'm pretty sure I had asked, 'Hey, man, what's going on? Is everything okay?'"
The Week 4 broadcast showed Mahomes speaking emphatically to Bieniemy after the Chiefs' final drive of the first half against the Raiders ended in a game-tying field goal rather than a go-ahead touchdown.
The Chiefs made the decision to go for the 28-yard field goal after Mahomes threw an incompletion toward tight end Noah Gray on third and goal.
"There's so many errors that take place throughout the case of a game, and hell, I've probably cussed somebody out about something," Bieniemy said Thursday. "But that stuff, it happens, and not that you ever take anything personally."
The Raiders went ahead just before halftime with a go-ahead field goal, although the Chiefs ultimately won after Kenneth Walker III took advantage of a fourth-quarter fumble to run in a game-winning touchdown.
The Chiefs could still look to finish off more scoring drives going forward. Kansas City is ranked 14th in the NFL with a 63 percent red-zone touchdown rate through Week 5.
This is not the first time Mahomes has drawn attention for an animated sideline discussion with Bieniemy, who rejoined the Chiefs for a second stint as offensive coordinator this offseason after previously serving in the role from 2018 to 2022.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid expressed faith in Bieniemy while speaking to reporters ahead of his team's upcoming Week 6 matchup against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers.
"I think EB is very thorough," Reid said. "He's demanding, and I appreciate that. As a head coach, I appreciate that, and the guys respond to it."
The victory over the Raiders allowed the Chiefs to head into their Week 5 bye as one of the three undefeated teams remaining in the NFL.
The Chiefs will look to ride the momentum of their 4-0 start into a game against the winless Chargers, which have recorded the NFL's second-fewest passing yards so far this season, when Sunday's game kicks off at 4:25 p.m. ET in Kansas City.
