Mike Tomlin Drops Brutally Honest Quote on Cowboys Defense Holding Players-Only Meeting in Video
Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin doesn't take it as an encouraging sign that the Dallas Cowboys defense staged a players-only meeting.
"I think you're dead," Tomlin said when asked by Jason Kelce on the New Heights podcast about what a players-only meeting symbolized. "โฆ If it did occur, I'd like to not hear about it. The fact that you hear about it is what makes it B.S."
The Cowboys are allowing the second-most yards per game (395.4) after finishing 30th in the category in 2025.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said he and his defensive peers chatted behind closed doors following a 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The purpose of the meeting was "looking ourselves in the mirror."
"Putting what we wanted our standard to be, we put that on the board. We went by bullet point, bullet point," he said, per Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' official site. "Are we holding up to this? Are we being this? As a unit, how can we get closer? What is it? Just hearing from all of us. It really wasn't like a fire drill conversation, it was more so, 'What can I do to help you? What do I expect from you on Sundays, or every Monday walk throughs?'"
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters Wednesday he was encouraged by his players taking the initiative and holding themselves accountable:
Of course, a coach in Schottenheimer's position isn't going to say anything else publicly. Taking any other tack would risk alienating his players and/or fellow coaches.
The players-only meeting is coupled with the arrival of Mike Pettine, an experienced NFL coach and coordinator. He has the title of senior defensive assistant to defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who will start working from the booth instead of the sideline.
Add it all together and Tomlin's conclusion might be astute. The Cowboys are in trouble and lacking in solutions to turn around what's one of the NFL's worst defenses.
