Kayla Harrison Gives UFC Retirement Update in Video Ahead of Amanda Nunes Title Fight
Kayla Harrison doesn't have firm retirement plans following her upcoming fight against Amanda Nunes.
But walking away from UFC also remains a possibility.
"I don't know," she said when asked by insider Ariel Helwani if this will be her last fight. "I don't think so. I don't know, we'll see."
Helwani then suggested it may be a double-retirement fight since "both of you have nothing left to do in the sport. And unless it's a rematch, I feel like you're both done."
Harrison granted it is "a good theory" since "anything is possible" but cleared up her position on her career with potential retirement looming.
"I'm already satisfied with my career," she said. "Let's get that straight. I could walk away tomorrow and be fine and have peace. This is for me. I want Amanda as a worthy opponent. She brings out the best in me. I think I bring out the best in her. It is worth my time and my effort to challenge myself against Amanda. And may the best woman win."
Harrison, who is the reigning UFC bantamweight champion, was initially scheduled to face Amanda Nunes in January. However, the fight was postponed because Harrison required neck surgery due to herniated discs.
Yet they will face each other on Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York City in a highly anticipated showdown between the champion and Nunes, who is widely considered one of the greatest UFC fighters of all-time despite previously retiring in 2023.
Nunes is a former two-division UFC champion who figures to offer quite the challenge for Harrison.
With such a high-profile showdown looming, Harrison doesn't seem like she will focus on whether she will retire or not until after the fight.
