New NFL Rumors on Dan Quinn's Commanders Hot Seat After End-of-Game Blunder vs. Giants

Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn is expected to "get some time to turn things around" after a costly offensive miscommunication late in Sunday's overtime tie against the New York Giants, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday.

Fowler noted how much runway Quinn will get after his team's 1-3-1 start to the 2026 season "is uncertain."

"In the short term, Quinn plans to improve communication with staff and players to ensure this doesn't happen again," Fowler reported. "Quinn and his staff practice game-day situations frequently, and he consults his coaches on situations before each drive and throughout drives.

"But, clearly, something was missed this time, and Quinn plans to improve, among other things, in-week stress points with his coordinators."

Fowler predicted the Commanders' performance in the three games remaining before the trade deadline will impact the franchise's view of Quinn going forward.

The Commanders are playing at the San Francisco 49ers next Monday before a Week 7 bye.

Washington will then return home for Sunday games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams before general manager Adam Peters has to commit to a direction ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.

Quinn is in the third year of his tenure with the Commanders, which began with an NFC title run in Jayden Daniels' 2024 rookie campaign but was derailed in 2025 amid the quarterback's injury issues.

Daniels again struggled with consistency and injuries early in the 2026 campaign before the Commanders hit a low point in Week 5. A tied game against the Giants ended when the Commanders offense ran out the clock instead of attempting a potential game-winning 42-yard field goal.

Quinn after told reporters offensive coordinator and first-year playcaller David Blough had made the final call to Daniels, but that responsibility for the late-game gaffe "starts with me."

The tie against the Giants meant the Commanders had won just three of their last 17 games under Quinn dating back to next season.

Quinn said Monday he had spoken to Commanders owner Josh Harris after the tie as part of his normal postgame process.

"No one is pleased with this outcome and where we're at, but the part that we do have, those hard conversations, we're honest about where we're at and what we need to fix," Quinn said Monday.

Quinn will hope to make his case to stick around with the Commanders by showing off improved communication when his team returns to action next Monday in Santa Clara.
