The Detroit Red Wings are finalizing a seven-year contract extension worth $91 million with Alex DeBrincat, according to ESPN's Emily Kaplan.

Per Kaplan, seven years was the maximum amount that DeBrincat could have received in an extension. He was eligible to sign for eight years before the new collective bargaining agreement kicked in on Sept. 16.

DeBrincat is set to earn $13 million annually once the extension starts during the 2027-28 season, ranking No. 11 among all NHL players (via Spotrac).

The Michigan native previously expressed his desire to remain a member of the Red Wings heading into his 2026-27 campaign.

"I've said it before, I love playing here," DeBrincat saidย Sept. 19, per Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News.

"I take a lot of pride playing for the Red Wings and putting that jersey on every night," he added. "Everyone in this room takes a lot of pride and has respect wearing that crest. It's a privilege and something I don't take care lightly."

DeBrincat is beginning his fourth season in Detroit after spending the first six years of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators.

During the 2025-26 season, he racked up a team-high 85 points for Detroit while suiting up in all 82 regular-season contests. It marked the fifth consecutive year in which he appeared in 82 games.

This season, DeBrincat has remained a key contributor for the Red Wings despite their 1-3-2 record. He's amassed four goals and four assists across six games.
