Jameson Williams' NFL Fine Rescinded After Marijuana Celebration in Lions vs. Bills
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams kept his bank account safe for now.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Williams won both his appeals of $14,926 and $11,941 fines for celebrations in Detroit's Week 2 loss against the Buffalo Bills. For one of the fines, Williams denied his "brief gesture" was offensive and argued that "marijuana is legal in some states if that was the gesture he was making."
"Although I rescinded this fine, please make every effort to celebrate with your teammates in the best professional manner possible," appeals officer Derrick Brooks stated.
Williams was fined for taunting and for an illegal celebration/vulgar act. His $26,867 Week 2 total came before he was fined $23,417 for unnecessary roughness stemming from impermissible use of the helmet during Detroit's 31-24 Week 3 victory over the New York Jets, which brought his season total to $50,284.
Williams had a slow start to the season but appears to have found his groove. He produced six catches for a season-high 102 yards in a Week 4 loss to the Carolina Panthers, and he scored his first two touchdowns of the season in Sunday's 45-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
If Williams can continue producing at a steady level, he will add a much-needed dimension to Detroit's offense. The Lions are already tied for the league lead with 32.8 points per game, and Williams appears poised to continue his upward trajectory over the next few weeks.
Now that he's kept his wallet full, Williams can enjoy Detroit's bye in Week 6 before the Lions return to action on Oct. 25 against the Green Bay Packers.
