Josh Allen Praises Matthew Stafford in Video After Bills-Rams, 'Greatest Thrower of the Football'
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen believes Los Angeles Rams signal-caller Matthew Stafford is the "greatest thrower of the football of all time" per a postgame interview with ESPN's Laura Rutledge following Buffalo's 37-34 road win over L.A. on Monday evening.
"I've got an unbelievable amount of respect for Matthew," Allen said. "The way he's played the game, the way he's always played it. He's as tough as they come. If he's not the greatest thrower of the football of all time, I don't know who is. He spins it. He's a competitor. He's a quarterback that every guy should strive to be like."
The 38-year-old Stafford, who is in his 18th NFL season, completed 40-of-54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns.
Stafford put on a clinic, connecting with Puka Nacua 17 times for 138 yards and a score and finding Davante Adams for two more touchdowns (alongside his five catches for 51 yards). The Rams sorely needed his arm on a night where the running game didn't really get going (77 yards on 23 carriesโ3.3 yards per carry).
Buffalo's rushing attack did catch fire, with James Cook and Allen combining for 232 rushing yards and three touchdowns. So the Rams needed Stafford to keep pace.
Stafford delivered, and it looked like his efforts would be enough for a win when the Rams lined up for a game-winning 48-yard field goal attempt in overtime. However, Bills linebacker Gregory Rousseau blocked the kick, and Allen led Buffalo downfield for their own game-winning field goal.
It's a tough loss for the 2-3 Rams, but they can take solace in Stafford's ability to go blow-for-blow with anyone and keep the Rams in games. The reigning NFL MVP is arguably playing the best ball of his career after throwing for a career-high 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns last year.
He's endured a tough schedule so far (the Rams' first five opponents have combined for a 17-7-1 record) but ranks second in the league in passing yards per game (314.4).
One can certainly make a case he's one of the NFL's best throwers of all time. Candidates include Aaron Rodgers, Dan Marino, John Elway and Patrick Mahomes, among others.
Allen is clearly a huge Stafford fan, though, after watching him Monday.
