'Disgusted' Mike Tomlin 'Threw Up' from Cam Skattebo's Fumble, Commanders-Giants Tie
Mike Tomlin knows what winning football looks like from his 19 years as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Sunday's game between the Washington Commanders and New York Giants that ended in a 27-27 tie was anything but winning football.
"I'd describe it as disgusting," Tomlin said Sunday during NBC's coverage. "Division wins are too precious in the National Football League. I was disgusted by the Skattebo fumble. I threw up in my mouth a little bit at the end of the game. It's just tough, we'll never know what happened. โฆ Division wins are very precious, and they had one in their hands and let it slip away."
The Cam Skattebo fumble he referenced happened in overtime when all the Giants needed was a field goal to win the game. They were inside the Washington 30-yard line when the running back lost the fumble.
That put Washington in a position where a field goal would win on the other side, and it seemed like it was going to come away with a win when it drove to the New York 24-yard line.
However, Jayden Daniels took a snap, looked confused with the ball in his hands and was tackled in bounds with the clock still running. The Commanders didn't have any timeouts remaining and were unable to line up in time for a spike, which meant the clock expired and the game ended as a tie.
New York's missed field goal on the first possession of overtime was just a preview of what was to come in an overtime that both teams would surely like to forget.
"We've just got to communicate that, that's the whole thing," Daniels told reporters after the game. "It starts with me, communicating to the whole offense in the huddle. And I think everybody will say that from the top down."
Ultimately, the Giants likely feel better about the tie considering the Commanders were in a position to win it without the time mismanagement at the end. But Skattebo's fumble also cost them an opportunity to come away with an NFC East road victory.
New York is still in first place at 3-1-1 as the only team that isn't below .500 in the division. As for the 1-3-1 Commanders, they missed a chance to build some momentum with Daniels returning to the lineup from injury.
That they blew a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter before that overtime likely just makes it worse.
