'Total Luck,' Jaguars' Win vs. Eagles Called Out by Rival NFL Coach
One rival coach isn't convinced Jacksonville Jaguars return man Ameer Abdullah purposefully went down at the ideal moment to set up a game-winning field goal in Sunday's 19-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
"I can tell you what teams do not practice," the coach told Mike Sando of The Athletic. "Nobody in the NFL practices running back kickoffs 53 yards in seven seconds and getting tackled with exactly one second left. This was total luck for Jacksonville that the game clock was not reading four zeroes. Total chance. The returner didn't even try to get down. He was trying to house it."
The situation they described is what happened at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
After a 48-yard field goal from Jake Elliott, the Eagles kicked off with eight seconds on the clock. Abdullah caught the ball on his own 8-yard line and got tackled on the Eagles' 39 with a lone second remaining.
That left just enough time for Cam Little to drill a walk-off 57-yarder.
For his part, Abdullah asserted it was all part of the plan.
"We practice things like that," he told reporters while adding he mentally counted down the time during the play.
Based on how hard he was charging forward, it didn't look as though the veteran running back was intending to go down.
Whether the return was perfectly executed or simply a stroke of good fortune is irrelevant. It's not the first time and won't be the last that a team lucks its way into a win.
