Giants' Cam Skattebo Takes Blame for OT Fumble, Reacts to Tie vs. Jayden Daniels, Commanders
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn slammed his headset on the ground and looked on in disbelief as time expired in overtime against the New York Giants on Sunday.
On the opposite sideline, there were different emotions.
Running back Cam Skattebo, who fumbled in the red zone on the previous drive, said he felt a "sigh of relief" seeing the game end in a tie. He also took accountability for his miscue.

Predicting Every Team's Trade Deadline Strategy 🧠
Report: Colts Taking JT Trade Calls
"It sucks. There's 11 guys on the other team just screaming at you, telling you you messed up, it's your fault, you sold the game, everything," Skattebo told reporters. "You get that in the huddle. You get that laying on the floor after you do it. It sucks, but like I said earlier, the great players that become great in this league move past those things and continue to work and get back on the field and make plays when their name's called."
Head coach John Harbaugh explained running the ball despite being in field-goal range. He noted the team was trying to "get as many yards as we could," per Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.
"That's a really, that's kind of, strategically, the idea was to run it twice, and then run it down, get as close as we could, protect the football, which we talked about numerous times, and then run it down and take the knee. So in case he doesn't make the field goal, there's no time for them to come back and get the field goal. That's the strategy. That's the strategy we decided on early in training camp, and that's the strategy we'll probably do next time, too. We'll see. Depends how close we are. But, Skatt knows he's got to—Skat played a hell of a game, but he's gonna have to learn from that. And I think everybody's gotta learn from that. What type of running is called for in that situation. We practice that very situation plenty of times. I expect him to be accountable. I know he will, he already was. And he'll do better next time, so we gotta learn from that."
The Giants had the ball first in overtime but missed a field goal from 46 yards out, putting the ball in the hands of Jayden Daniels and the Commanders for a chance to win it.
Washington couldn't capitalize, though, going three-and-out and punting it back to New York.
The Giants managed to push the ball down the field, thanks in part to Skattebo, who had a 19-yard rush and a nine-yard rush on the drive. New York had the ball at the Commanders' 24-yard line with a golden opportunity to run the clock down and kick a game-winning field goal, but Skattebo fumbled and gave it back to Washington.
Skattebo's fumble will certainly be the play that Giants fans remember, but it likely won't be the one that sticks with most NFL fans.
The Commanders marched down the field and were in position to kick a game-winning field goal of their own with just seconds remaining, but Daniels took a sack, and the clock continued to run. Washington scrambled back to the line of scrimmage but ultimately couldn't spike the ball and set up the field goal.
While the Giants escaped without a loss, they were essentially one miscue away from moving to 4-1 on the season. Skattebo has been mostly solid in his second NFL season, but the late fumble was his fourth of the season. That surely is something he and the team will address before Week 6.
