Wilfredo 'Bazooka' Gomez Dies at 69, Hall of Fame Boxer Won Titles at 3 Different Weight Classes

International Boxing Hall of Famer Wilfredo Gómez died Saturday at the age of 69.

Former WBO president Paco Valcarcel announced Gómez's death on social media, and Gómez's son informed Puerto Rican news outlets that his father had been hospitalized with respiratory issues prior to his death, according to ESPN's Brett Okamoto.

Nicknamed "Bazooka," Gómez was a world champion across three different weight classes during a professional boxing career that ran from 1974 to 1989.

Born in Puerto Rico, Gómez represented his country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich before turning pro.

Undefeated over the first 33 matches of his career, Gómez posted an overall record of 44-3-1 with a remarkable 42 victories by way of knockout.

Gómez won the WBC junior featherweight world title in 1977, the WBC featherweight world title in 1984, and the WBA and The Ring junior lightweight world titles in 1985.

Regarded as one of the greatest junior featherweights of all time, Gómez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1995.
