USWNT vs. Spain Score, Highlights, Stats and Reaction
Spain defeated the United States 2-0 on Saturday in a showdown between the two highest-ranked teams in international women's soccer at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
No. 1-ranked Spain jumped on the USWNT early, scoring two goals in the first 14 minutes of the match, and leading the rest of the way.
In just the third minute, Spain's Patri Guijarro hit a cracking shot from outside the box to beat goalkeeper Claudia Dickey and put La Roja ahead 1-0:
Just 11 minutes later, Spain struck again when Eva Navarro deposited a perfect cross from Salma Paralluelo:
With that, the Americans found themselves in an unfamiliar position down by two goals.
Steve Goff of Yahoo Sports and Keeper Notes broke down just how uncommon it has been in recent years for the United States to trail by more than one goal, particularly under head coach Emma Hayes:
It momentarily looked as though the U.S. had cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute, but Sophia Wilson was ruled to be offsides upon VAR review:
The U.S. continued to pour it on in the minutes that followed, and a golden opportunity was earned when Mallory Swanson was hauled down in the box.
However, 19-year-old Lily Yohannes' penalty kick was stonewalled by Spanish goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares, allowing Spain to maintain their 2-0 advantage:
A red card to Spain's Athenea del Castillo in the first minute of stoppage time gave the U.S. some hope, but Spain stood tall and closed out the clean sheet.
While Spain won the possession battle with 54 percent to the United States' 46 percent, the Americans' strong play in the second half resulted in them finishing with 12 shots and nine shots on goal, compared to six and three for Spain.
Saturday's loss continued the trend of uneven play by the USWNT dating back to April.
Over their past six matches, the Americans have won three and lost three with defeats at the hands of Spain, Brazil and Japan.
Meanwhile, Spain's only loss in their past 21 matches came at the hands of England in April.
While Saturday's result was a disappointing one for the Americans, they will have a chance to bounce back quickly when they clash with Spain once again in another friendly Tuesday night in Chester, Pennsylvania.
