D'Andre Swift Responds to Fumble Problems After Benching, Bears HC Calls Out 'Egregious' Error
D'Andre Swift has had a strong start to the 2026 campaign, but the Chicago Bears running back has struggled to keep the ball in his hands.
After fumbling twice in the first four games, Swift believes it won't be a persistent issue throughout the season.
"That ain't me," Swift told reporters Thursday.
His most recent fumble came in Sunday's win over the New York Jets when linebacker Jamien Sherwood brought him to the ground and the ball popped out of his left arm. Bears head coach Ben Johnson didn't sugarcoat how he felt about the mistake.
"I think the one last week was egregious," Johnson said. "It's one that we can't have. There's too many times when the ball's getting away from our body and he knows that."
Swift didn't come back into the game after the fumble, with Kyle Monangai taking over as he picked up 146 yards and a pair of scores. Though he took accountability for the fumble, Swift didn't think being taken out of the game was a benching by Johnson.
"I wasn't really told anything, but I do understand that can't happen," Swift said. "So I take whatever comes with that. You know what I mean? I can't put the ball on the ground. I'm putting the team and everybody else [down]. I can't do that. I know that."
Monangai and Swift have been one of the best running back duos in the NFL this season, with Monangai rushing for 324 yards and three touchdowns and Swift adding 311 yards and three touchdowns.
Swift will look to continue his fast start to the year, while avoiding fumbles, against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
