Serena Williams Reveals Barbie Signature Doll Honoring 2005 Australian Open Win in Video, Photo
Mattel has released a second Barbie Signature Serena Williams Doll this year in honor of the tennis icon.
Specifically, this Barbie sports the outfit Williams wore at the 2005 Australian Open en route to her seventh Grand Slam singles title.
Williams, who won 37 Grand Slams (23 singles, 14 doubles), spoke about the honor.
The first Barbie doll was in celebration of International Women's Day and celebrated Williams' entrepreneurial success.
"It's something that was memorable that I can play with with my girls, like the other one," Williams told Ariana Brockington of TODAY.com in an exclusive. "So it's like two sides of me. It's like the business side and the sports side."
The 2005 Australian Open featured two epic Williams comebacks in the semifinals and finals. In the semis, Williams lost the first set 6-2 to Maria Sharapova but fought back with 7-5 and 8-6 victories in the next two sets. Williams saved three match points.
In the finals, Williams fell 6-2 again in the first set, this time to Lindsay Davenport. However, Williams enjoyed a great comeback, winning the next two sets 6โ3, 6โ0 for the win.
"That slam meant so much to me. I was able to come back from so many downs, and even in the finals of that match, I was down so much," Williams told Brockington. "But I was somehow able to never give up. So when I'm playing with my daughters, I always want (to teach) them to never give up."
Williams added: "When we were thinking of different outfits, we kept going back and forth, and that one just kept standing out. The colors were really fantastic on it, as well. We thought that that also told a really good story."
Per Brockington, the new Williams Barbie doll is now available for purchase.
