Kyle Monangai Injury, New Rumors on Bears RB's Status & Fantasy Implications for Week 5 vs. Packers

Kyle Monangai is in the middle of a breakout season, but the Chicago Bears running back's status reportedly is up in the air heading into a Week 5 clash against the Green Bay Packers.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Monangai is dealing with a turf toe injury that he's hoping to play through, but there's a chance he won't be available this week or next.

Monangai, who is in his second NFL season, has had a tremendous start to the 2026 campaign, rushing for 324 yards, the seventh-best mark in the league, along with three touchdowns on 60 carries. His 5.4 yards per carry ranks sixth in the NFL this season.

He's coming off a 146-yard, two-touchdown performance in a 23-12 win against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Monangai potentially missing this week has fantasy implications as well. Given his uncertainty heading into the game, managers will likely need to have a replacement ready just in case he's unable to go.

One option that could still be available is the Chargers' Keaton Mitchell, who has been getting increasingly more touches throughout the season. Philadelphia's Will Shipley also has the chance to get more action this week since Saquon Barkley is week-to-week and Tank Bigsby is set to undergo core muscle surgery.ย

The Bears will hope to have him on the field this week in a divisional matchup with the Packers, but the good news is they have another strong backfield option with D'Andre Swift.

Swift, who is in his third season in Chicago, has rushed for 311 yards and three touchdowns through four games. Unfortunately for the Bears, Swift is questionable heading into Sunday's game because of hip and knee injuries. He did not practice on Wednesday and was limited on Thursday.

The two backfield injuries come amid a hamstring injury to star quarterback Caleb Williams. The third-year player suffered the injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings and has missed the last two weeks.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson said earlier this week that Tyson Bagent would once again be the starter for Chicago as Williams works his way back to the field.

Even with Williams missing the past two weeks, the Bears have gotten off to a 3-1 start as they look to get back to the playoffs following a strong 2025 campaign. Chicago will look to pick up a rivalry win on Sunday, but the status of its running backs will be a big factor in whether it can leave Lambeau Field victorious.
