Kyle Monangai Injury, Latest News on Bears RB's Status & Fantasy Implications for Week 5 vs. Packers

Kyle Monangai is in the middle of a breakout season, but unfortunately the Chicago Bears running back will not be on the field for a Week 5 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters Friday that Monangai has been ruled out with a toe injury. His injury is a "bigger concern" than Chicago initially believed, per ESPN's Courtney Cronin.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday that Monangai is dealing with a turf toe injury that he was hoping to play through. Fowler added that his availability over the next one-to-two weeks was uncertain.

Monangai, who is in his second NFL season, has had a tremendous start to the 2026 campaign, rushing for 324 yards, the seventh-best mark in the league, along with three touchdowns on 60 carries. His 5.4 yards per carry ranks sixth in the NFL this season.

He's coming off a 146-yard, two-touchdown performance in a 23-12 win against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Monangai missing this week has fantasy implications too, as managers will now need to pick up a replacement.

One option that could still be available is the Chargers' Keaton Mitchell, who has been getting increasingly more touches throughout the season. Philadelphia's Will Shipley also has the chance to get more action this week since Saquon Barkley is week-to-week and Tank Bigsby is set to undergo core muscle surgery.ย

While the Bears will be without Monangai, the good news is they have another strong backfield option with D'Andre Swift.

Swift, who is in his third season in Chicago, has rushed for 311 yards and three touchdowns through four games. Unfortunately for the Bears, Swift is questionable heading into Sunday's game because of hip and knee injuries. He did not practice on Wednesday and was limited on Thursday.

The two backfield injuries come amid a hamstring injury to star quarterback Caleb Williams. The third-year player suffered the injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings and has missed the last two weeks.

Johnson said earlier this week that Tyson Bagent would once again be the starter for Chicago as Williams works his way back to the field.

Even with Williams missing the past two weeks, the Bears have gotten off to a 3-1 start as they look to get back to the playoffs following a strong 2025 campaign. Chicago will look to pick up a rivalry win on Sunday, but the status of its running backs is a big factor in whether it can leave Lambeau Field victorious.
