Kelvin Sheppard Defends Blitzing Bryce Young Despite Lions' Struggles in Loss to Panthers

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard doubled down on his decision to continually blitz Bryce Young in a Week 4 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

"Those calls were the right calls, and I'll leave it at that," Sheppard told reporters Thursday.

When asked about a potential disconnect between play calling and execution, Sheppard said, "Those are private conversations that we have that I'm going to keep in house. Those calls were the right calls."

Young went 7-for-8 when blitzed on 12 dropbacks during the Panthers' 32-26 win over the visiting Lions last Sunday, per 100.9 The Mitt's Ben Bosscher and Pride of Detroit's Al Karsten.

Young now leads all quarterbacks in passing yards under pressure (411) through four games, per NFL Next Gen Stats.

The Lions are now preparing for a Week 5 matchup at the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday.

Sheppard said Thursday he found it "ultra disrespectful" to be asked if the Lions felt their offense needed to carry the team amid the defense's struggles.

"I can care less about the talk. It's all poison, and I mean that. Every word of it's poison, and I told the players," Sheppard said.

The defensive coordinator also said he was "absolutely not" changing his evaluation of what his unit can accomplish heading into Week 5.

"I'm standing firm in my beliefs... We have a certain way we said we are going to play, and we are," Sheppard said.

"Now, do you tweak things here and there?... Yeah, that's football. But to just outright bring in a new playbook every week because the last one didn't go right, that, to me, leads to ultimate dysfunction and the dam completely broken."

So far this season, the Lions rank third among NFL teams in pressure rate (46.6 percent) and first in non-blitz pressure rate (48.2 percent), per The Score's Sam Hoppen.

Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill have also helped the Lions rank fourth in the NFL in ESPN's pass rush win rate through Week 4.

That hasn't been enough so far to limit explosive plays from opponents. Detroit has allowed the most total yards against of any NFL team during their 2-2 start to the season.

The Cardinals are heading into this weekend's matchup on a three-game losing streak during which they surrendered at least 31 points in each contest.

Arizona's offense has still been active, scoring a combined 54 points in their last two losses at the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants.

Sheppard, who is in his second season as the Lions' defensive coordinator since his promotion from linebackers coach in 2025, will be tasked with limiting Jacoby Brissett when the Week 5 matchup kicks off Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET in Glendale.
