New Yankees Rumors Reveal Aaron Boone's Status as Manager for 2027 After MLB Playoff Loss to Rays

Despite a disappointing playoff sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, the New York Yankees are bringing back Aaron Boone in 2027.

Per USA Today's Pete Caldera and YES Network's Jack Curry, the Yankees will keep Boone for his 10th season as manager.

In the immediate aftermath of New York's three-game sweep at the hands of the Rays, Boone's future was a talking point that he didn't want to engage with.

The Athletic's Brendan Kuty said even before the series ended that Boone's job was likely safe.

Boone signed a contract extension with the Yankees in February 2025 that runs through 2027, so it will be interesting to see if the club has him play it out to see how next season goes or tries to sign him to a new deal.

The Yankees originally hired Boone in December 2017 to replace Joe Girardi. He had no coaching or managerial experience when he got the job, though he has been around MLB since he was born as the son of former All-Star Bob Boone.

Boone's tenure in the Bronx is fascinating because he has never had a losing season and made the playoffs eight times in nine years, but the franchise has not won a World Series title since 2009.

New York's lone World Series appearance under Boone thus far came in 2024 when it lost in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees reached the ALCS four times.

Boone ranks seventh in Yankees history in managerial wins (790) and eighth in winning percentage (.583).

The roster as it stands right now that Boone will be working with in 2027 is in an interesting place.

Aaron Judge is coming off an injury-plagued season and will turn 35 on April 26. Giancarlo Stanton, who is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract, probably can't be relied on anymore because of his injury issues. Gerrit Cole will be playing in his age-36 season. Max Fried turns 33 on Jan. 18.

While there is concern about the age of that group, there is a younger core emerging with players like Cam Schlittler, Ben Rice and Luis Garcia Jr. already in place. George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones also figure to open 2027 in the starting lineup.

There is talent in place for the Yankees to once again be among the top teams in the AL, but their window with Judge playing at a superhero level is starting to close.
