New NFL Rumors Reveal Browns QB Plans for Watson, Shedeur, More Amid Gabriel Injury Return

The Cleveland Browns reportedly plan on using four of the spots on their 53-man roster on the quarterback position.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported Wednesday the AFC North team prefers to keep Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and sixth-round pick Taylen Green on the roster with Gabriel now designated to return.

The Oregon product has been on injured reserve with a back injury.

The battle for the starting quarterback position between Watson and Sanders was a major storyline in training camp for the Browns, but the former ended up winning it.

And the team is off to an excellent start and improved to 3-1 with its 27-24 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. It has won three games in a row following an opening loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and scored a season-high amount of points against Pittsburgh.

Watson has completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 855 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 127 yards as a runner.

He will surely remain in the starting role as long as the team is winning and he is healthy, but there will be plenty of depth behind him if the Browns do, in fact, keep four quarterbacks on the active roster.

Cabot noted they wouldn't be the only team to do so in the league this year, as the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles and Steelers have also kept four signal-callers.

That Cleveland wouldn't want to move on from its other three quarterbacks behind Watson on the depth chart also isn't surprising. After all, it just selected Sanders and Gabriel in the 2025 NFL draft and Green in the 2026 NFL draft.

They are all young signal-callers who could have bright futures ahead of them, and Watson is playing on the final year of his deal.

The Browns could be looking at a different quarterback situation entirely without their starter next season and likely want to further evaluate their three younger options by keeping them on the roster.
