Howie Roseman Addresses Notion Eagles Are Prioritizing Future After Cam Jurgens Trade to Ravens

The Philadelphia Eagles have not entered a rebuilding mode despite a disappointing 2-2 start, the retirement of superstar right tackle Lane Johnson and this week's surprising trade of offensive lineman Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens.

"I think nothing has changed in terms of our goals," executive vice president and general manager Howie Roseman told reporters on Wednesday. "We're trying to win this year. I think from my perspective, just looking at what is the ultimate goal, which is to win the last game of the year and then have a run like we've had. Obviously, since Coach [Nick Sirianni] has been here we've made the playoffs five times and have been to two Super Bowls. You want to have an extended run so my job is to look at how we can have sustained success for a long period of time and you don't get many opportunities to get second-round picks in trades and get flexibility. I think just looking at our team, a lot of guys on long-term deals and being able to create some flexibility is a good situation for us financially and with the picks."

The Eagles traded Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-rounder to Baltimore for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-rounder. The team now has two first-round picks and two second-round picks in 2028.

Jurgens had struggled this season after making the move to guard, and the team's offense in general has sputtered for a second straight campaign. Injuries to players like wideout DeVonta Smith, tight end Dallas Goedert, running backs Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby and guard Landon Dickerson haven't helped. But despite the circumstances, Roseman felt it was a trade he couldn't pass up.

"We weren't looking to move Cam," he told reporters. "... Had a chance to watch Drew [Kendall] here play center. He's doing a nice job, have a young player there. I think for us, when you talk about [the second-rounder] and the [fifth-rounder] and going from the seventh to the fifth, we've had success in the fifth round. Plus, the money, plus Drew playing, we felt like we were getting four players for one. We just felt like for us with all of these guys that we've got coming up, a lot on the defensive side of the ball we want to re-sign and extend, felt like that was a good situation for us."
