New Alex Cora Rumors Reveal Managerial Decision for 2027 MLB Season Amid Phillies Buzz
Alex Cora reportedly won't be the next manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski spoke to Cora about becoming the team's new manager. Cora revealed that he's taking the 2027 season off, though.
He was previously offered Philadelphia's manager role in April and declined it to spend the rest of the summer with his family, per Nightengale.
Cora opened the 2026 season as manager of the Boston Red Sox, but was fired after the team started with a disappointing 10-17 record.
The Phillies also made an early manager change during their 2026 campaign, parting ways with Rob Thomson after a 9-13 start to the year.
Don Mattingly served as Philadelphia's interim manager for the remainder of the season, as the team finished with an 88-74 record and made a playoff appearance. The Phillies were ultimately eliminated from the postseason by the Atlanta Braves during their National League Wild Card Series matchup.
Mattingly has expressed interest in remaining Philadelphia's manager beyond the 2026 season, although the team has yet to make a decision regarding his future.
The Phillies' interest in Cora is understandable, as Dombrowski previously spent time with him in Boston from 2018-19.
Cora compiled a 620-541 overall record with the Red Sox, helping them make four postseason appearances in his first seven years as a member of the club. This included a 2018 campaign in which Boston captured its ninth World Series title.
