Mike McCarthy Says Aaron Rodgers NSFW Exchange Wasn't 'Normal' After Viral Steelers-Browns Video
One of the most notable moments of Thursday's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns came when Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy exchanged profanities, which the head coach said "wasn't normal" even though they've worked together for so long.
"I wouldn't classify it as normal, no," McCarthy told reporters Monday. "But I think the reality of it is it's a 20-year relationship. I think the fact that we were able to sit and talk numerous times over the weekend about that and a number of things.
"Not to put any pressure on my daughter, I'm getting to the grandfather age. I don't want to be saying those type of words, but it's an emotional competitive environment. I think it's something that we can definitely learn from."
Rodgers appeared frustrated that it was taking so long for a play call to get to the huddle and yelled accordingly, which prompted McCarthy to respond by calling him a "f--king a---hole."
The entire thing was captured on camera during the Prime Video broadcast.
It was a frustrating evening for the Steelers, who lost the game 27-24. While Rodgers threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns, he was also intercepted twice and sacked five times.
Even when the offense settled in and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the second of which tied the game in the final two minutes, the Pittsburgh defense failed to prevent the Browns from driving into scoring position for the game-winning field goal by Andre Szmyt.
McCarthy was the head coach for Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers from 2006-18 as well. The pair won a Super Bowl together and made the playoffs nine times. There is a long-standing relationship in place, and Thursday surely wasn't the first time there was tension between them.
Still, McCarthy expressed regret for using the words that he did, especially after it was aired on the national broadcast.
