Matt LaFleur Warns Packers Players Over Fumbling Issues, 'A Great Teacher Is The Bench'

The Green Bay Packers have a fumbling problem, and Matt LaFleur has an idea of how to fix the issue.

LaFleur said Sunday that he's willing to bench players if the offense can't clean things up.

"I think a great teacher is the bench," LaFleur told reporters after a 17-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "So, if guys don't start holding onto the ball, they're gonna be sitting on the bench."

The Packers have several areas to improve amid a 2-2 start, but holding onto the football is certainly one of the biggest issues to address. Running backs Kaleb Johnson and Marshwan Lloyd both fumbled against the Bucs on Sunday, and Green Bay now leads the NFL in total fumbles this year.

Johnson's fumble was especially costly as he lost the ball near the goal line during the fourth quarter.

The Packers also have the most drops and the most penalties, so discipline is an issue all around this year.

Green Bay came into the season with hopes of being a playoff contender, but it's hard to say where it has been so far. The Packers dropped their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings before squeaking by the New York Jets in Week 2. They lost to the Atlanta Falcons last week and barely got past the Bucs on Sunday despite Tampa Bay being without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The Packers have the talent to make a deep postseason run, but eliminating mistakes like fumbles is key for Green Bay. It sounds like LaFleur could be making some changes to the depth chart soon if the issue doesn't improve.
