Tyson Bagent Reportedly to Start for Bears vs. Jets Despite Case Keenum's Upset Win vs. Eagles
Despite the feel-good story that resulted from Case Keenum leading the Chicago Bears to a Week 3 win in his first start in three years, Tyson Bagent is expected to be their quarterback on Sunday.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t ESPN's Courtney Cronin), Bagent is set to start for the Bears against the New York Jets after suffering a concussion in Week 2.
Bagent cleared concussion protocol on Sunday, making him available to play in Monday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
However, given the timing, it was easier for the Bears to go with Keenum as their starter since he had received most of the first-team reps during the week of practice.
The move paid off because Keenum was fantastic. He finished 24-of-34 for 247 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Chicago's 27-7 victory.
Even though Keenum played well against Philadelphia's defense, signs have been pointing toward Bagent getting the nod in Week 4.
Rapoport noted Bagent received a majority of the first-team reps in practice this week.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters on Tuesday "there was a reason" Bagent won the backup job coming out of training camp and preseason, though he didn't commit to who his quarterback would be at that time.
Bagent played 10 snaps in the fourth quarter of Chicago's 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2. He entered the game after Caleb Williams injured his hamstring on a scramble.
The concussion occurred on the final play of the game when Bagent was sacked by Vikings defensive end Dallas Turner.
Assuming Bagent gets the nod, he will be Chicago's third different starting quarterback in four games. The Bears are off to a 2-1 start going into Sundays matchup with the Jets.
Chicago hasn't opened a season 3-1 since 2020. Bagent, now in his fourth season, has started four games in his NFL career. All four starts came during his rookie year in 2023.
