Sean McVay Reveals NFL Acknowledged Refs Missed Crucial Call in Rams' Loss to Broncos

Perhaps the biggest storyline from Sunday night's game between the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Broncos was the controversial defensive pass interference call that negated what would have been a game-sealing interception from Josh Wallace.

On Wednesday, Rams coach Sean McVay said that the NFL told him that Wallace shouldn't have been flagged for defensive pass interference.

The Rams led 26-23 late in the fourth quarter when Bo Nix led the Broncos offense into the red zone. Denver had the ball on Los Angeles' 11-yard line with just over a minute to play when Nix threw a pass intended for Pat Bryant and Wallace came down with it.

Had it not been for the penalty, the Rams likely would have been able to run the clock down and leave Denver with a win. Instead, a few plays later, Nix ran it in from the 1-yard line and the Broncos took a 30-26 lead, leaving Los Angeles with 47 seconds to answer.

Matthew Stafford and the Rams' offense managed to get down to the red zone, but his pass to Davante Adams in the end zone was intercepted as time expired.

McVay told reporters after the game that Wallace's interception "looked like it was a good, competitive play from my vantage point."

It was a frustrating night for the Rams, with penalties throughout. They were flagged 13 times, their most in a game since 2019.

"The ref called what he called and can't do nothing now," Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald said. "You know, woulda, shoulda, coulda. But it is what it is."

But McVay and the Rams can't dwell on Sunday's loss for long. They're 1-2 to start the season and need to put together a big performance against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday to get back on track.
