Deion Sanders Weighs In on Travis Hunter's Usage With Jaguars Amid NFL Rumors on Role

Colorado coach Deion Sanders says he has "no idea" why the Jacksonville Jaguars are using former Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter mostly on defense through two games of his second NFL season.

"I don't ask questions, because I'm not there," Sanders said in Wednesday's episode of Coach Prime's Playbook with Romi Bean (16:45 mark of the video below). "I don't know what transpires when we're not looking. I have no idea what's going on.

"I know who he was, and who he is right now. I know what he's capable of. I do know that."

Hunter primarily served as a wide receiver in seven games last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

He has seen just one target through the Jaguars' first two games of his sophomore NFL campaign while mostly playing as a cornerback.

Jaguars coach Liam Coen hinted earlier this week the Jaguars are considering expanding Hunter's role on offense after the unit struggled in a Week 2 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Offensive coordinator Grant Udinski said earlier this week Hunter's role offense would depend at least in part in finding balance with his defensive workload.

The Athletic's Jonathan Jones reported Saturday the Jaguars have no concern about Hunter's overall development despite the high cost of moving up to select him at No. 2 in the 2025 draft.

Multiple team sources reportedly told Jones they are expecting Hunter to continue improving as he gains more experience and continues working his way back from last season's knee injury.

The sources also pointed out Hunter has come close to making a bigger impact than his five tackles, one pass defensed and 11 total yards from scrimmage would indicate, according to Jones.

"Jags sources point out he has been close to some breakthrough plays," Jones reported. "In Week 1 he nearly scooped a KC Concepcion fumble that might have gone for a touchdown if he hadn't gotten tripped by a teammate. On the first drive against Denver in Week 2, Hunter was a half step from a potential pick six, getting his hands on the ball."

Jones also he reported he expects Hunter to see both more defensive snaps and more offensive opportunities in Sunday's Week 3 matchup against the visiting New England Patriots.

Hunter could be challenged with taking on a Patriots pass defense that has so far ranked among the most effective in the league should he get more looks at wide receiver when Week 3 kicks off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in Jacksonville.
