Latest MLB Playoff Picture and 2026 World Series Bracket Predictions

There are just two days left in the 2026 regular season, and the race to the finish line is exhilarating.

The wild card battle is intensifying, even though all four National League division races have been decided. The Padres can secure the top wild card spot with a win in one of their next two games, while the Cubs need either a win or a Phillies loss to secure the second spot. The Phillies hold a one-game lead over the Diamondbacks for the final NL wild card.

Over in the American League, the wild card picture is set, but there's still drama in the AL West, where the Astros and Rangers are tied atop the division, with the Astros holding the tie-breaker. Then in the AL Central, the Guardians lead by one game over the White Sox, but both are assured of at least a wild card berth.

After taking you through updated standings, we'll break down playoff predictions.

AL Playoff Predictions

Sports fans are in for a treat as the legendary Yankees-Red Sox rivalry heats up again in the AL Wild Card series for the second year in a row.

Aaron Judge's status is still uncertain, but the Bronx Bombers have found their rhythm at the plate in September.

The Red Sox pulled off a stunning turnaround by making the playoffs after falling 14 games under .500 in late June.

Boston's pitching is solid, but the bats have been inconsistent as of late, which gives the Yankees the edge.

The White Sox are another Cinderella story, becoming the first team to reach the playoffs after consecutive 100-loss seasons. If the current standings hold up, they'll face an Astros team that has struggled with pitching and has been inconsistent all season. However, Houston has one thing the White Sox lack: significant playoff experience with Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, and Jeremy Pena.

If Houston advances, they will meet the Guardians. Houston's run ends here. The Guardians' starting rotation is significantly better than Houston's, while the trade deadline acquisitions of Jo Adell and Nathaniel Lowe will provide the team with that additional power they've been missing in prior postseasons.

Meanwhile, the Yankees would face the Rays, who have been dominant at home all season. With Freddy Peralta returning to top form and the versatility of this lineup, Tampa Bay has the tools to make a deep run.

In the ALCS, this leaves us with a Rays-Guardians matchup, where the Rays again rely on their depth to advance.

NL Playoff Predictions

The Padres and Cubs could meet again in the Wild Card series, but this time San Diego would likely have home-field advantage. The Cubs lead the MLB in runs per game, but the Padres have been red-hot, with the best record since August. Vengeance, a resurgent lineup, and a dominant one-two punch in Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller lead them to the NLDS.

In the other wild card matchup, the Braves will host either the Phillies or Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks have won six straight games and are just one game behind the Phillies. While they also hold the tie-breaker, I don't envision a full-on meltdown in Philadelphia.

That'll lead to a wild card showdown between two NL East rivals. Atlanta dominated the season series 9-4, but in a best-of-three series it's hard to go against the Phillies' starting pitching.

The Brewers are the top seed, celebrating their first 100-win season. With home-field advantage and an elite pitching staff, they should be able to get past San Diego.

The Dodgers would face the Phillies in the NLDS again. This time they have home-field advantage. Last year, the Dodgers took this series in four games, and with the Phillies' lack of bullpen depth, I expect a similar result.

That sets up another Brewers-Dodgers NLCS. Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson are a two-headed monster for the Brewers. But let's not forget the Dodgers added back-to-back Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to an already stacked rotation at the deadline.

We all know the biggest concern: the Brewers' lack of power. Milwaukees' pulled-air rate is just 12.4%, tied for the lowest rate by any team in the past 10 seasons. Small ball won't be enough for them to usurp the two-time defending World Series champions.
