MLB Playoff Picture 2026 and Predictions for Final Postseason Bracket

The MLB regular season is approaching its end, but the real excitement is just beginning.

All four divisional races in the National League have been settled. However, the wild card race is intensifying. The Padres and Cubs have both clinched wild card spots, though they will be vying for positioning. Meanwhile, the Phillies lead the Diamondbacks by two games for the third NL wild card spot.

In the American League, the wild card race is all settled, but there is still some drama as the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are tied atop the AL West, with the Astros in front courtesy of a tie-breaker. Meanwhile, the AL Central sees the Guardians and White Sox going head-to-head for the division title, though both are assured at least the third wild card berth.

After a look at the updated standings, we'll break down our predictions for how the 2026 postseason might play out.

AL Playoff Predictions

The greatest rivalry in baseball is likely to return as the Yankees and Red Sox look poised to face off in the AL Wild Card Series for the second consecutive year. The Yankees are still chasing their first World Series title since 2009, while the Red Sox's postseason appearance is especially impressive after an inconsistent season.

As recently as June 24, the Red Sox sat 14 games below .500 with a 32–46 record. Boston is just the fourth team ever to reach the playoffs after being at least 14 games under .500, and their 75-game start (31–44) is the worst for any playoff team in MLB history. Their turnaround has been dramatic, but September has been tough; the Sox rank last in runs per game (3.00).

The biggest question is whether Aaron Judge will return. Regardless, the Yankees have home-field advantage and a strong pitching staff, with Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, and Max Fried likely starting in this best-of-three series. With their depth and momentum, I predict the Yankees will advance past Boston again.

Meanwhile, either the Astros or Rangers will host the Guardians or White Sox in the other wild card matchup. I expect the Astros to win the division and defeat the White Sox, relying on playoff experience and clutch play from Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez.

This would set up an ALDS between the Guardians and Astros, where the Guardians' pitching trio—Foster Griffin, Parker Messick, and Gavin Williams—could get them to the ALCS, especially with Steven Kwan's hot streak.

In the other ALDS, the Yankees would face the Rays, who feature a dominant rotation and lineup depth. With Drew Rasmussen, Nick Martinez, and Freddy Peralta now all in top form, I give the edge to the Rays.

This sets up a Rays-Guardians ALCS, where the Rays' versatility gets them back to the World Series.

NL Playoff Predictions

The burning question on everyone's mind: Will the Dodgers win the pennant again? We'll get to that soon.

It looks like the NL Wild Card Series could feature a rematch between the Padres and Cubs for the second straight year. This time, the Padres have home-field advantage. While the Cubs lead MLB in runs per game, the Padres have been red-hot, winning 16 of their last 20 games. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill have been outstanding since the All-Star break, and Manny Machado is returning to form. In addition, Nick Pivetta is back in the rotation, giving the Padres even more depth.

In the other Wild Card series, the Braves are projected to face the Phillies in an NL East showdown. The Braves feature MVP-caliber talents like Matt Olson and Ronald Acuna Jr., but their postseason hopes depend heavily on pitching. The Phillies counter with an impressive trio in Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler, and Jesus Luzardo.

Looking ahead to the NLDS, the Padres would meet the Brewers. Milwaukee secured the top seed and is celebrating its first-ever 100-win season. Although the Brewers are not known for their power, their pitching staff, led by likely Cy Young winner Jacob Misioroski and Logan Henderson, should give them an early advantage and a path to the NLCS.

Meanwhile, I expect the Dodgers to take on the Phillies again in the NLDS. The Phillies may be looking for revenge, but the Dodgers' lineup, with stars like Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Teoscar Hernandez, along with a hall-of-fame-like rotation, make them tough to beat.

This all sets up an NLCS clash between the Dodgers and Brewers. Milwaukee, who were swept by Los Angeles last year, should be more competitive this time. However, the Brewers' lack of power will cost them yet again, and the Dodgers seem poised for another trip to the World Series.
