49ers' John Lynch Sidesteps Question on Mac Jones Trade Calls Amid QB Injuries Around NFL

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch didn't directly address a question regarding opposing teams calling about the availability of backup quarterback Mac Jones during a Thursday appearance on KNBR's "Murph & Markus."

"I got to leave that alone," Lynch said, via Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area. "What I will tell you is, I think a lot of people see all that and say, OK, there's opportunity. It also tells you we're very fortunate to have a guy like Brock [Purdy], franchise quarterback, but then to have a guy like Mac in the event [of Purdy getting injured]. There's no more important position in football -- they're all important -- but I think we know as your quarterback goes, so goes your team. So, I think it's a really special situation to have Brock here and to have Mac here. And to have a guy we're really excited about with Kurtis Rourke.

"I think back to [former 49ers coach] Bill Walsh; maybe he was on to something when he had Joe Montana but he also brought Steve Young in here. It's a good position to be in a position of strength, and it provides opportunities in a number of ways, the most important way being that you're well insulated in the event something ever were to happen. And then there also are opportunities you receive calls and then you make decisions accordingly. But we love our situation at quarterback."

Several starting quarterbacks have already suffered injuries this season, including New York Giants passer Jaxson Dart, Washington Commanders signal-caller Jayden Daniels and Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

While the exact recovery timeline for Daniels and Williams is unknown, Dart is set to undergo season-ending surgery after suffering damage to his MCL, PCL and meniscus during a Week 2 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.

Backup passer Jameis Winston is currently filling in under center, although Giants head coach John Harbaugh told reporters that the team is looking to make an external addition at quarterback on Wednesday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter also brought up Jones as a potential target for New York in a Thursday appearance on Get Up.

Purdy is off to a strong start to the 2026 season, helping the 49ers compile a 2-0 record.

He's completed 80.4 percent of his passes for 492 yards and five touchdowns compared to just one interception, averaging 8.8 yards per attempt. Purdy's 95.7 QBR ranks No. 1 among 32 qualified quarterbacks, via ESPN.

Even though his impressive play could cause San Francisco to consider parting ways with Jones, the 49ers may also choose to keep their backup in order to preserve their depth.

Purdy previously missed eight games during the 2025 season due to a toe injury, but the team was still able to make the playoffs with Jones filling in as his temporary replacement.

San Francisco went 5-3 in Jones' eight starts, as he threw for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns while getting picked off six times.

If Purdy gets hurt again and Jones is traded, the 49ers will need to rely on second-year passer Kurtis Rourke.

Rourke has showed promise in the preseason, but the 2025 seventh-round pick has yet to appear in a regular-season game.

As the 49ers look to go on a deep playoff run, they may choose to keep Jones despite potential trade interest in him.
