Matthew Stafford's Wife Kelly Treating Season Like 'It's the Last' for Rams QB amid Retirement Buzz

The wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is approaching his NFL career with a year-by-year mindset.

"Every season now I will say I'm treating it like the last," Kelly Stafford said to People's Skyler Caruso. "It's been 18 years now. It's been a wild, wild ride."

Kelly made it clear she has no idea when her husband with actually hang it up. Assuming 2026 could be his final year helps her appreciate each game as it comes.

"The feeling of taking the girls to the game and watching their dad run over, that fills my soul with so much joy," she said. "I'm going to completely miss it when it's gone so much, but I also have to prepare for that moment.

"Treating this season like it's the last of everything. That's how I'm looking at it right now."

Matthew Stafford is under contract through 2028, but he and the Rams restructured his deal in a way that eases the salary cap implications if he retires before that.

Los Angeles has already lined up a succession plan. It wouldn't have used a first-round draft pick on Ty Simpson if it felt confident about Stafford playing for another four or five years.

The Rams' first two games haven't provided any added insight into what the 38-year-old will decide about his playing status for 2027. He and the team rebounded from a Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers by beating the New York Giants 28-6. Stafford went 22-of-31 for 327 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

In Week 1, Stafford showed his age a bit. But if his Week 2 performance is more indicative of what's to come, he may have a hard time walking away when he clearly has a lot left in the tank.
