Brandin Cooks, 49ers Reportedly Reach Contract Amid Evans and Robinson Injuries, Updated Depth Chart

The San Francisco 49ers are adding some depth to their wide receiver room following Demarcus Robinson's ankle injury, with veteran Mike Evans also nursing a hip injury.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Niners have signed veteran Brandin Cooks to their practice squad to get him up to speed before bringing him onto the roster.

Cooks was a first-round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2014 and has also spent time with the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills.

He's recorded six seasons with 1,000-plus receiving yards: two in New Orleans, one in New England, one in Los Angeles and two in Houston, his most recent of which came in 2021.

He returned to the Saints last season but was cut in November after requesting to be released. He finished the season with the Bills. Across 15 games last year, he had 279 yards on 24 receptions.

Cooks is far from an elite receiver at 32 years old, but the Niners need all the help they can get after having their wide receiver room decimated by injuries already this year.

Ricky Pearsall underwent season-ending surgery to repair his PCL before the season even started, eliminating a player who was set to be one of Brock Purdy's key targets.

De'Zhaun Stribling suffered an ankle injury in Week 1, and he'll miss at least 10 weeks after undergoing surgery. Robinson is looking at missed time after a high-ankle sprain, and Evans is questionable heading into Week 3 because of a hip injury.

The 49ers figure to be playoff contenders after a 2-0 start that included a win over the Los Angeles Rams, but all the injuries piling up mean they'll have to stay afloat until they can get everyone healthy.

Cooks will look to aid the offense and perhaps earn a larger role even when key receivers return.
